Why is Mental Health Awareness at Work Needed?
One in five people struggles with a mental health challenge or illness during their lifetime. It’s far more common than people think, yet unfortunately, is not given nearly the same level of understanding as more tangible conditions, like a broken wrist or a heart problem.
Staff who have not had mental health challenges may struggle to empathize with those who have. Due to widespread assumptions and lack of knowledge, mental health conditions are often feared and stigmatized. This can create an unhealthy work atmosphere where those with mental illnesses feel ashamed and unable to speak up about their problems.
Without proper support, mental illness can impact your employees’ confidence, work identity, and productivity. According to WHO, approximately 12 billion work days are lost annually due to depression and anxiety. These two conditions also cost the global economy about $1 trillion a year because of the lowered productivity.
A caring and motivating environment is key to supporting your employees’ mental well-being. Your employees need to be given the tools and support to look after their mental health and help others who may be suffering.
